Nadal returns with a win in his 800th matchPosted on 19/02/2014 in Tennis
Top seed Rafa Nadal has made a winning return to the court at the Rio Open.
The world number one was playing his first match since losing last month's Australian Open final and erased some of the bad memories from what he calls the worst match of his career, beating Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 7-5.
Nadal missed a tournament in Buenos Aires last week with fitness issues, but there was little call for alarm as he dispatched his fellow countryman without breaking sweat.
It was also the 800th match of Nadal's career and one that the Spaniard hopes will start a run which dominates another clay court season and results in yet another French Open title.
The 27-year-old lefthander will face another compatriot in the next round, 72nd-ranked Albert Montanes, who is coming off an impressive win over Dutchman Robin Haase.
