Federer defeats Murray to progressPosted on 22/01/2014 in Tennis
Four-time Australian Open champion Roger Federer has completed a four-set victory over Andy Murray to progress to the semi-finals of the competition.
The Swiss former world number one won 6-3 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 to set up a semi-final against Rafael Nadal.
Federer came close to winning the match inside three sets, but failed to serve out and missed two match points during the tie-break.
Murray, in only his second tournament since back surgery, saved six break points in an epic 19-minute game early in the fourth set, but was constantly on the back foot and eventually succumbed.
After the match, the Scot said: "I was proud of the way I fought. I changed my tactics a little bit, started playing a little bit more aggressive and that was maybe my undoing a little bit at the end."
Federer has now secured his place in the semi-finals in Melbourne for the 11th consecutive year.
