Phil Dowson to lead England against the Baa BaasPosted on 23/05/2012 in Rugby
Phil Dowson will lead England out on to the field when they take on the Barbarians this Sunday (May 27th) at Twickenham.
The Northampton back-rower has only five international appearances to his name, but has been installed as the captain of a young squad for the upcoming match in the absence of Chris Robshaw.
The regular captain is unavailable due to his participation in the Aviva Premiership final and Dylan Hartley has been overlooked for the honour, despite being Dowson's skipper at Saints.
A host of other England regulars who play for Harlequins and Leicester will miss the match which Stuart Lancaster will use to assess new talent before he takes his team to South Africa for a tour of three Tests.
Carl Fearns, Jamie Gibson, Tom Johnson, Joe Launchbury, Freddie Burns, Alex Goode, Haydn Thomas, Christian Wade and Jonathan Joseph are all hoping to use the opportunity to impress the head coach and book their place on the plane to the southern hemisphere.
