Lions captain decision will not be rushedPosted on 22/03/2013 in Rugby
British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland has said that he will not be rushed into naming his captain for the upcoming tour of Australia.
Now that the Six Nations is over attention turns towards Lions action with Gatland having a number of possibilities for the privilege.
Sam Warburton, Alun Wyn Jones, Chris Robshaw, Brian O'Driscoll, Rory Best and Gethin Jenkins are among those names already being touted as possibilities.
However, Gatland said that the naming of his full squad, which takes place on April 30th, is still his number one priority.
"There is a huge amount made of the captaincy," said the Kiwi.
"Whoever we will select I am sure they will do a great job. We get the squad first and then decide after that," he added.
Gatland even went so far as to say that the person who is named tour captain has no guarantee of a starting berth for the first Test, which will be held in Brisbane on June 22nd.
The tour will begin on June 1st when the Lions travel to Hong Kong to play against the Barbarians.
