Taylor stunned in the final of the UK OpenPosted on 11/06/2012 in Other
Robert Thornton has won his first major darts event after beating Phil Taylor in the final of the UK Open.
The Scotsman was a big underdog going into the showpiece occasion against the 15-time champion of the world, but produced a solid display which was capped with a scintillating 121 check out in what was to be the final leg.
Taylor hit the all the opening shots and found himself with a 2-0 lead, but in the end it was a one-sided match with Thornton winning 11- 5.
"I'm very proud," Thornton told Sky Sports. "My kids are going to be up jumping all over the place.
"To just get to the final, I was happy enough. To win it – it's just unbelievable."
The Power was magnanimous in defeat, despite a spectator getting on the stage and seemingly unsettling him.
He said that Thornton "caned" him and deserved the title, Taylor will now look to get to winning ways at the World Matchplay in Blackpool next month.
