Phil Taylor edges past Meryvn King at the World MatchplayPosted on 24/07/2012 in Other
Phil Taylor came past a stern test to advance into the second round of the World Matchplay event at Blackpool.
Mervyn King is one of the few players on the tour not to be intimidated by the Power and went arrow to arrow with the 15-time world champion for much of the encounter.
Despite hitting eight 180s, King crucially missed three darts at a double to allow Taylor to step up and take a 9-8 lead, before he went on to seal the victory with the throw in the next leg.
"I was nervous tonight to be honest but I got the job done and I'm through," said Taylor, who changed his darts before strutting up to the oche.
The defending champion will now face Ian White who looked in great form as he eased past an angry Vincent van der Voort 10-5.
Tonight (July 24th) will see the final first round matches at Winter Gardens, with Gary Anderson taking on debutant Dean Winstanley.
