Messi breaks Meuller’s recordPosted on 10/12/2012 in La Liga
Lionel Messi has set a new record for goals scored in a calendar year when he netted for the 85th and 86th time of 2012 against Real Betis last night (December 9th).
The Argentinean maestro had been chasing Gerd Meuller's 1972 record and after being stretchered off in the final group game of the Champions League on Wednesday, some Barcelona fans feared the worse.
However, the 25-year-old recovered in time and equalled the German's record on the 16th minute, before setting a new benchmark just nine minutes later.
"I always say the same, it's nice for what it means but the victory is more important as it maintains our lead over the other teams," Messi told Spanish TV station Canal Plus afterwards.
Despite setting a new record with three games remaining, he added that his priorities remain winning back the La Liga and Champions League titles.
Barcelona's win at Betis keeps them six points clear at the top of the table and their record-breaking start to the season has left current Spanish champions Real Madrid 11 points adrift.
