Joe Root ruled out of World T20

Joe Root has been ruled out of the upcoming World Twenty20 tournament in Bangladesh.

He sustained a fractured thumb while batting against West Indies in last week's ODI series win and following a consultation with a specialist, the 23-year-old has left the tour of the Caribbean.

Root tweeted: "Bitterly disappointed I'm unable to make the World Cup!

"Want to wish the boys the best of luck and have every confidence in the whole squad."

The England and Wales Cricket Board has not given any indication as to whether Root will be available for the start of the English domestic season, which is now less than a month away.

Ian Bell has been called up as Root's replacement in the England squad that is currently 2-0 down in a three-match T20 series with the Windies.

England skipper Stuart Broad has missed the contests with his own injury problems, but hopes to return for the World T20.
